Daniel Chapter 8 Explained and Iran’s Power Shift
Nelson begins by pointing to a recent event involving an Iranian military commander who openly insulted Iran’s foreign minister over a naval radio channel. At the same time, that commander ignored orders and fired on ships near the Strait of Hormuz.
To Nelson, this was not just a rogue officer acting out. He sees it as a public sign that Iran’s official government is no longer fully in control. According to him, the real power now rests with the IRGC, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
He explains that Iran’s Supreme Leader has become isolated and possibly unable to rule. In that vacuum, military leaders are stepping forward. They are not just advising the government. They are acting like the government.
The Ram With Two Horns
Nelson then turns to Daniel 8, where Daniel sees a ram with two high horns. One horn is higher than the other, and the higher horn comes up last.
The traditional view connects this to the Medo-Persian Empire. Nelson agrees that this had a past fulfillment. But he also believes Daniel 8 has a second, end-times fulfillment.
In his view, the first horn represents Iran’s clerical rulers, the ayatollahs and Supreme Leader system that rose after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The second horn represents the IRGC. This military power came later, but now it is becoming stronger than the religious leadership.
That matters because the text says the higher horn came up last. Nelson sees that as a striking match with Iran’s current situation.
Daniel 11 and the Fourth King
Nelson then connects Daniel 8 with Daniel 11. Daniel 11 speaks of kings rising in Persia, with a fourth king becoming far richer than the others.
He says many teachers treat this as only ancient history. But he argues that history does not fully match the passage, because Persia had more than four rulers in that ancient period. So, in his view, the older events were a foreshadow, not the final fulfillment.
Nelson applies the pattern to modern Iran. He identifies the first three rulers with Iran’s modern Supreme Leader structure. Then he suggests the fourth king may be an emerging IRGC leader who will gain control over Iran’s wealth.
That wealth issue matters. Daniel says the fourth king becomes strong through riches. Nelson believes this could happen if the IRGC takes control of Iran’s oil, banking, and national economy.
The Coming Conflict With Yavon
The next piece is Daniel’s mention of Yavon. Many English Bibles translate Yavon as Greece, but Nelson argues it points more broadly to the region that includes modern Turkey.
In Daniel 8, a goat attacks the ram with great force. Nelson identifies the ram as Iran and the goat as Turkey or a Sunni coalition connected to Turkey.
So, in his view, current tensions in Iran are not the final Gog and Magog war. They are setting up the Daniel 8 war first. Iran must be weakened, reorganized, and then eventually struck by this coming goat power.
What Christians Should Watch For
Nelson gives several signs to watch. First, he says to watch for Iran’s current Supreme Leader structure to become weaker or replaced. Second, watch for an IRGC leader to consolidate Iran’s wealth. Third, watch for rising conflict between Iran and Turkey.
He stresses that prophecy is not meant to entertain believers. It is meant to prepare them. These events, in his view, should remind Christians that God is sovereign and that history is not random.
A Call to Be Ready
Nelson closes with a strong reminder. If Daniel chapter 8 is being fulfilled in real time, then believers should not panic. But they should pay attention.
For him, the main point is not Iran. It is not the IRGC. It is not even the coming war.
The point is that Jesus is coming. And if these signs are moving into place, then now is the time to be spiritually awake, watchful, and ready.
