In today’s world, the term “falling away” isn’t just about people leaving the church — it’s about people walking away from Jesus Himself. In this special message from Dr. David Jeremiah on Turning Point, he tackles what the Bible calls “The Falling Away,” a prophetic sign of the end times. This isn’t just a slow spiritual drift — it’s a sudden departure by people who once claimed to follow Christ. Dr. Jeremiah helps us understand what it is, why it matters, and how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from becoming part of this tragic trend.
Perhaps little is more heartbreaking in the Christian’s life than to watch a fellow believer abandon the faith. Dr. David Jeremiah presents strategies for guarding against apostasy and the falling away of believers.
What Is the Falling Away?
Dr. Jeremiah explains that apostasy — the falling away — doesn’t refer to atheists or people of other religions. It’s specifically about those who once claimed to follow Christ but turn their backs on Him.
- Not all unbelievers are apostates.
- But all apostates are unbelievers—they once heard the truth but chose to reject it.
Just like Ernest Hemingway said about going bankrupt—“gradually, then suddenly”—people fall away from faith in the same way.
A Sign of the End Times
Scripture makes it clear that apostasy will increase before Jesus returns. Paul wrote in 2 Thessalonians 2:3:
“That day will not come unless the falling away comes first.”
This is not just a general drifting; it’s a specific, prophetic event. Dr. Jeremiah warns that this could begin before the Rapture and even happen in our lifetime.
Why Are People Falling Away?
Dr. Jeremiah identifies three major reasons:
1. Deceived by Lies
- False teachers and demonic influences are spreading spiritual lies.
- Many are drawn away from the truth by teachings that feel good but lead them away from Christ.
- These deceivers lack a conscience — their spiritual compass is broken.
2. Disillusioned by Life
- Jesus’ parable of the sower (Luke 8) shows how some accept the gospel emotionally but fall away when life gets hard.
- They want solutions, not a Savior.
- When problems arise and blessings don’t come as expected, they give up.
3. Distracted by the World
- Worries, wealth, and pleasures choke out spiritual growth.
- People trade their faith for the things of this world.
- Their hands are so full of “stuff,” there’s no room left to hold on to Jesus.
How Do We Stay Strong?
Dr. Jeremiah offers three keys to guard our faith:
✅ Examine Yourself
Make sure your faith is real. 2 Corinthians 13:5 tells us to “examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.”
✅ Encourage Yourself in the Lord
Like David in 1 Samuel 30, we must learn to strengthen ourselves spiritually, even when we feel alone.
✅ Exercise Your Faith Daily
Grow in godliness. 1 Timothy 4:7 says to “exercise yourself toward godliness.” Faith that doesn’t grow becomes stale — and vulnerable.
Keep Running the Race
Dr. Jeremiah reminds us that no one plans to fall away. But it happens when we drift, stop growing, or let life crowd out our relationship with Jesus.
So how should we live?
- Keep walking with Christ.
- Stay in the Word.
- Stay in community.
- And ask, daily, “Lord, what can I do for You today?”
“Now unto Him who is able to keep you from stumbling…” (Jude 24) Let that be your anchor. Jesus can keep you from falling — if you stay close to Him.
