When people think of Revelation, many imagine beasts, battles, and mysterious signs. Some avoid the book entirely, assuming it’s too confusing or frightening. But Pastor Greg Laurie reminds us that Revelation isn’t about hiding truth. It’s about unveiling Jesus Christ. And in the final chapter, Revelation 22, we see not only how the story ends but also how we should live until that day.
Revelation’s Key Theme
Greg opens by stressing that Jesus is the main character of Revelation. From chapter 1 all the way through chapter 22, Christ is front and center. Revelation 1:19 even provides the outline:
- What you have seen – John’s vision of the glorified Christ.
- What is now – messages to the churches.
- What will take place later – events after the church is caught up.
This helps us understand the structure. First, John sees Jesus in His glory. Then, we get a sweep of church history. Finally, we’re shown heaven, tribulation, judgment, and the promise of a new heaven and earth.
Words You Can Trust
In Revelation 22, verse 6, Jesus says, “These words are faithful and true.” That’s significant because in our world truth feels shaky. Many reject the idea of absolute truth, but Jesus assures us His words are reliable. Greg points out this matches what Paul wrote: in the end times, people will turn from sound doctrine, chasing teachers who tell them what they want to hear. That’s why we must hold tightly to Scripture.
A Blessing for Readers
Revelation is unique because it contains a built-in blessing. Chapter 1:3 promises blessing to those who read, hear, and keep its words. Greg explains that means three steps:
- Read it – not just silently but even aloud.
- Hear it – pay attention, as if your life depends on it.
- Keep it – live it out, because prophecy is always tied to godly living.
God doesn’t give prophecy to entertain us but to wake us up.
Jesus Is Coming Quickly
Three times in this chapter Jesus says, “I am coming quickly.” Greg explains that this doesn’t mean “immediately” in human time but rather “suddenly.” Like dominos falling, once the events begin, they’ll happen in rapid succession. His return will be swift, and there will be no time to prepare in that moment. That’s why readiness now is critical.
Rewards and Accountability
Revelation 22, verse 12 tells us Jesus will reward each person according to their work. Greg encourages believers not to grow weary. Even when mocked, persecuted, or tired, God sees everything and will reward faithfulness. Galatians 6:9 reminds us not to give up. What we sow today—whether to the flesh or to the Spirit—will determine our eternal harvest.
Don’t Tamper with God’s Word
Revelation 22 contains a strong warning not to add to or take away from the prophecy. Greg explains this isn’t about writing notes in your Bible margins. It’s about twisting, ignoring, or distorting Scripture to fit personal desires. Satan himself tried this when he misused Psalm 91 during the temptation of Christ. We must let the text speak for itself rather than forcing our own ideas onto it.
The Final Words of Jesus
The very last recorded words of Jesus in the Bible are in verse 20: “Surely I am coming quickly.” John responds, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” Greg emphasizes that last words matter, and Jesus chose these. He wanted His church to be focused on His return, ready and waiting.
A Universal Invitation
Revelation closes with a call: “Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life freely.” Greg explains that this invitation is for everyone. No one is forced, but anyone who wants eternal life can receive it. The hunger and thirst people try to fill with success, relationships, or possessions can only be satisfied in Christ. The door is open—if you come to Him.
Living Ready
Greg finishes by reminding us that every decision we make now matters for eternity. When Jesus comes—or when death comes—there won’t be another chance. That’s why we must respond now. Revelation doesn’t just describe the end of the story; it invites us to be part of God’s ending, one where believers truly do live happily ever after with Christ.
Are you ready?
Revelation 22
The River and the Tree of Life
22 And he showed me a river of the water of life, [a]clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of [b]the Lamb, 2 in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve [c]kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; 4 they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. 5 And there will no longer be any night; and they [d]will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them; and they will reign forever and ever.
6 And he said to me, “These words are faithful and true”; and the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent His angel to show His bond-servants the things which must soon take place.
7 “And behold, I am coming quickly. Blessed is the one who [e]keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed me these things. 9 And he *said to me, “[f]Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers the prophets, and of those who [g]keep the words of this book. Worship God!”
The Final Message of Revelation 22
10 And he *said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the one who does wrong still do wrong, and the one who is filthy still be filthy; and let the one who is righteous still practice righteousness, and the one who is holy still keep himself holy.”
12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to reward each one as his work [h]deserves. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life, and may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral persons, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.
16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you of these things [i]for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires, take the water of life without cost.
18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and [j]from the holy city, which are written in this book.
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with [k]all. Amen.
